At just seventeen years old, Jek Trayden’s power with Sartious Energy could be the greatest in the world, but that power comes at a price—a darkness within him that attacks while he sleeps, producing nightmares so real they leave him bruised and bloody.
With the attacks worsening, Jek can’t refuse an opportunity to end his nightmares for good when the King promises him a cure in exchange for a task.
But after the King’s true intentions are revealed, Jek finds himself in a fit of rage, stealing the King’s fearless and livid daughter from the palace—on her wedding day—and fleeing the city with the wrath of her father on his tail.
Jek’s about to find out there are some things in this world worse than his darkness.
*A note on this novel in relation to the series*
The Sartious Mage can be read as the first or second novel in the Rhythm of Rivalry series, but it should be read before the third.
This novel takes place in the same world as Bastial Energy, but on another continent with different characters that play a major role in later novels.

I could see the bones of a good story there, but the author failed to deliver it. After a king refuses to keep his end of a bargain, Jek kidnaps the princess as leverage to get a cure for his darkness. Then he runs around everywhere with the princess in tow and occasionally gets captured and fights another powerful mage and.. wait. Yeah, that's it. That's all that happens. The ending was too conveniently resolved, the baddie was a wimp, and the romance awkward and unnecessary. And I never really felt anything for the characters. The whole desperate-kid-with-magic-that-might-kill-him was an interesting starting point, but the story fell apart and dissolved into a painful romance soon thereafter. And Jek had zero agency. He never made anything happen- just constantly reacted to events. Kidnapping the princess wasn't even his idea.
I did like Jek's relationship with his sister. But overall, I don't care enough to read the rest of the series.

The Sartious Mage The Rhythm of Rivalry Book 15 eBook BT Narro Reviews
Excellent writing, amazing story, great dialogue, humor, romance, and nonstop action. Jek is a lovable character with realistic flaws. The way he grew throughout the story, especially in relation to Lisanda, was moving and perfectly crafted. Every character was deeply complex, and the world is even more intriguing to me now.
Like Bastial Energy (The Rhythm of Rivalry Book 1), the book just kept getting better and better with every turn of the page. I see how this book could be read as the first in the series, but it also is a great sequel to Bastial Energy. I didn't know I could be more excited about the next book, but I am now. Keep 'em coming Narro.
Of all the books by B.T. Narro this is by far the one i like the most. I really enjoyed reading it.
The characters are interesting, the main character has some depth and uses his magic in very interesting ways. The side characters are fun to watch and really work well together as a package.
The plot, while it has its slow moments, is very well paced and carry's on nicely. I never got bored with how things were going.
If you already read one of Narro's books you are bound to pick it up anyway, regardless of what i say, but if you have not read any of his books, this isn't exactly a sequel to anything, and is as good a spot as any to jump in.
Enjoy Reading!
Narro has once again cast a unique band of characters in a world full of magic, treachery, and love. Readers follow Jek, a seventeen year old master Sartious mage who finds himself in a situation unlike any other. The book is set in the same world as Bastial Energy, a companion novel to The Sartious Mage, and readers find themselves enthralled with the excellent world building, plot twists, and emotional roller coasters on every page. Plagued with mysterious nightmares that leave him bloody and searching for a cure, to what lengths will Jek go to find relief from his curse? Truly deserving of a five star rating, The Sartious Mage will keep readers on the edges of their seats the whole way through! Recommended for young adults and older, this novel is certainly one to check out!
A light and airy read. Complete with convincing cold scene forcing raptured embraces. The villains in this story appear to be just about everyone except the heroine and hero. The victims would be anyone not having a name in the book and any reader demanding hard core fantasy (and not expecting about half the story line to be a rousing PG harlequin romance). The magic concepts are original if very vaguely explained. The writing is solid and well edited. The story is an original story line. Bad things with good intentions tend not to work in real life but this is fiction and it made the story very entertaining. The noticeable thing that was not fleshed out is how the love and magic happened. It still worked as the main character was clearly not understanding that, and it was written mostly from his perspective. I think the other missing part is the lack of depth in the character development. But this is sort of a second book. Maybe a little more about their past would have helped. Also the history of the world was also a little thin. This gets a three and a half stars with an extra half star for making me happy with a happy ending.
The book gets off to a promising start. I liked the character of Jek and his anger at being cheated by the evil King. His escape from the castle was exciting with the promise of more action and character development to come. Unfortunately, then the princess enters the scene and after that the story grinds to a complete halt. Plot is replaced by juvenile bickering between Jek and the Princess. Jek alternates between admiring her breasts, and her hair, and her eyes, and her soft skin (are you bored yet? I was), etc etc, while the Princess showers him with scorn and anger and admonishments not to fall in love with her - excellent advice in my opinion. He ties her up and gets her filthy, then releases her when she promises to help him, then ties her up when she breaks her promise, then releases her etc etc etc. At that point I admit I gave up. Too bad, this could have been at least a decent story.
Kind of a generic fantasy novel (like the others in the series). Standard orc/elf/hero's journey stuff without too much thought put into it, but nothing that will make you dislike it if you enjoy the thinly-disguised-dungeon-master-setting-notes genre of literature.
Minor quibble I kind of with the author pulled his generic gibberish high-fantasy names from a somewhat more-arcane random letter generator, I spent the entire book trying to work out what tailoring had to do with anything because I have a not-uncommon grammar school education that included things like latin roots. If you're going to hijack phonemes from actual, existing languages you should at least make some effort to make what you're hijacking relevant to the thing you're naming. Or, you know, you could not do it to begin with, you could call it "green magic" and not worry about it, no one would judge you for not trying to make your simple color-coding scheme all pretentious.
