At a time when coming out of the closet is chic, it is certainly not that way for Brad Archer. After a traumatic sexual encounter in high school, Brad now in college, is having trouble with romantic relationships. He has dates with girls that fail miserably and continues to have horrific nightmares about both his past and the fears for his future. Will the people he loves accept him or will his nightmares come true? Even his two best friends Chris and Laura can't seem to help him. Brad must learn again to trust himself and others so his journey in coming out can be realized. Sometimes tragic, often funny, it is all about Thine Own Self.
"Heading back to my room, I feel an intense gripping in my stomach. It's an ache that I've felt for a long time, but it's worse now than ever before. The fear of confronting this elephant in the room of my life is so intense I want to vomit. I take some deep breaths as I slide my card through the slot and enter my room."
Thine Own Self A Coming Out Novel edition by Ryan Provencher Literature Fiction eBooks
Ryan Provencher has crafted an incredibly honest and touching account of one young man's journey out of the metaphorical closet and into the light of his true self. The novel is expertly written and works well to suck the reader into the world of this young man on his way to finding and loving himself, as he is, for who he is.The situations depicted in the novel are one’s we've all encountered, each character in the book reminded me of people I have met or have known through my own journey. As a result, Provencher’s story is my story and I suspect that anyone who reads this novel will find ways of relating and understanding the very true to life issues that the main character allows the reader to experience with him.
Whether you are gay, bi, transgender, closeted or out and proud, this story is about you. And for those who aren't LGBT, this story is also about you because the novel shows us that no one accepts themselves in a vacuum. It is because of our connections to one another and the price of losing that connection, that we all succumb to fear and the need to hide parts of ourselves in order to hold on to the love and affection that means so much. But "Thine Own Self" shows us that honesty and truth doesn't necessarily cost us the people and connections that we feared it would. We learn that coming out can actually bring us closer together, not only to one another, but to ourselves.
Provencher’s talents are immense and I can’t recommend this book more highly.

Thine Own Self A Coming Out Novel edition by Ryan Provencher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I liked this novel as it combined a believable story with awareness setting about the difficult process of sexual identification and eventual "coming out" that more people than we think go through.
I thought the book was very believable and touching. I liked that it was raw and real. I hope that this book will help people who are trying to be who they truly are but fear reactions from others. I'm looking forward to reading more of Ryan's work.
This book was a very good read. I received it and finished reading it within 2 days! It really puts the coming out process into perspective. As a straight woman I never really thought about what it could be like for someone to have to go through that internally and externally. I have a new understanding and appreciation for that process. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
Thine Own Self is light fiction about a young man accepting his sexuality. For those expecting expert character development, it's not there. If you're expecting erotica, it is nowhere to be found. If the reader is seeking something to read for an afternoon at the beach, it isn't half bad.
Being in my 20s im still struggling with who i am, and this book is spot on to the stuff i have and still continue to deal with. I had a similar roommate in college and have experienced many of the same things that Ryan writes about. I think this is a great resource for any one in the lgbt community or for any parent, sibling, or friend of someone who is lgbt.
Wonderful. Uplifting. Passionate. Heartfelt. Enlightening. These are just a few words that convey the feeling I got when I was reading this book. This may be a coming out story and a struggle for self-acceptance, but the underlying theme that kept resonating with me was one of deep respect for family, friendship and the desire to live life with passion and joy. The main character, Brad Archer, definitely deals with his fair share of intense and disturbing situations on his relentless quest to find himself. However, the author superbly reveals Brad's zest for living life to the fullest as the strength he needs to endure these moments of doubt and self-hatred and to truly persevere. Being gay is not a choice, but being happy is. This book is a blueprint for choosing and defining your own happiness.
I think this is the first book from this author as I did not find any other books, yet, by Ryan Provencher. From the start of cracking open this digital novel, there is perfect quote from Harvey Milk which does an beautiful job of inspiring pride and self realization. Use of Shakespeare quotes for the chapter titles felt very thoughtful and poignant for the subject matter of this novel. It's a great swift read which is not too complex and the author does a great job of drawing you into the story. It's a fantastic start from this new author!
